In 350 BC, Aristotle wrote that the state “aims at good in a greater degree than any other [human community]” because the community of the state state is the community of us all. While we have different views on the over all aims and size of the various levels of government, something we should be able to agree on is that we are all members of our community, and we all want our community to prosper. Sadly, in the era of sound bites and professional pundits, the nature of the state as the agency that looks to the common good of all its members has given way to an “us against them” view of our fellow citizens. One of the reasons that George Washington warned against party politics was the very nature of the artificial binaries political labels create: to divide us against our selves, and against the common good.

As citizens, we owe it to ourselves to read history and political philosophy not to immerse ourselves in the echo-chamber of modern punditry, but instead to hear past it. We should never lose sight of the reality that we are all, collectively, working toward the common good of our community.

In the heat of July, republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney was on the campaign trail in Colorado. Romney stopped by Care and Share, a food bank in Colorado Springs, to lend a hand in providing aid to wildfire victims in the area. Thousands have been displaced as a result of the fires that have ravaged the state this summer.

However, Romney was there to do more than just provide assistance to Coloradans in need. He also had a message for Americans, which was broadcast to millions around the nation through cable and direct tv providers.

In spite of the devastating wildfires, the former governor of Massachusetts implored Americans to continue visiting Colorado. Romney reminded the public that only a small part of the state had been affected, and that vacationing there will help boost the economy.

While Romney did not make any political statements during his time at the food bank, his campaign team has been working hard to earn votes in Colorado – a key swing state in the 2012 presidential race.

In fact, Romney has already stated that Colorado could end up being the deciding factor in the election. The latest polls show that the battle between Romney and incumbent president Barack Obama for the Centennial State is too close to call.

I was watching a TV program today and an important question was asked: should a politicians wife be considered when voting for a candidate. Ann Romney and Michelle Obama will also be the focus of their husbands this upcoming elections, but should they be?

Ann Romney has been the focus lately because of comments made by a Democratic stagiest who basically said Mrs. Romney had no idea what is to work. A lot of women took exception to what was said because Mrs. Romney is a stay at home mom who raised her five boys.Is this new to you? Catch up here But why should this matter to women politically? The focus was taken off her husband’s record when it came to women’s issues and squarely put where it shouldn’t have been and that was on his spouse.

Who cares what Ann Romney or Michelle Obama do in their private lives. This election should be what each candidate benefits women and how they support women’s issues. Romney has been avoiding the subject on abortion and equal pay for women because of his stance or lack off stance on these subjects which may hurt him in November.

President Obama has been touting his record on women’s issues, but in some cases he still has a problem with certain type of women in the country. The point is, let’s deal with the issues this election, not the spouses.

Though it is impossible to follow all of the world’s current events, these global hot spots remain in the media spotlight and impact world events everyday.

Keep an eye on the Middle East, even if the Arab Spring media mania has died out. Currently the Americans are trying to draw down in Afghanistan, Egypt’s presidential elections are quickly approaching, and the Syrian government refused to comply with the United Nations cease-fire agreement. These events only scratch the surface of this region.

China continues to grow rapidly in economic and political importance. Within decades it will become the world’s largest economy. Those it chooses to trade with, buy and borrow from will also do better financially. However, how it plans to treat its own 6.7 billion citizens, including the Tibetans, and whether it censures nations like North Korea, are examples of how China has a major influence on human rights.

The European Union still stands on shaky ground. Creditors still look on nervously, as the European Central Bank supports financially unsteady economies.

America’s economy is slowly turning. The country is months away from a presidential election, yet the Republican party is still in turmoil.

Lastly Brazil is a country to keep up with, in the South America; it has good governance and an export economy that traders favor.

Political predictions are difficult to make. During every presidential election, millions of people watch television late into the night, wanting to know, state by state, where their candidate of choice stands. Predictions are made as the votes come in. Keep in mind, though, the cautionary tale of the 1948 Presidential election between Dewey and Truman. Before the polls closed, Dewey was so far ahead of Truman that The Chicago Tribune lead with the headline “Dewey Defeats Truman”. As it turned out, Truman ended up winning that election though an upset victory shortly after the story of his defeat went to press.

The prediction of who will make a great president has a cautionary tale of its own. The public generally believes that a good President is someone that has enjoyed success in the political arena. Contrary to that notion, President Abraham Lincoln, over a span of approximately 30 years, lost six separate political bids. Then, in 1860, he became President. He was one of the strongest and most successful Presidents, holding the country together during the Civil War, and, with impeccable timing, delivering The Emancipation Proclamation on the heals of Union victory at Antietam.

Be sure to keep these stories in mind before making a political prediction.
